Our teachers and support staff are very experienced at helping students with little or no English to settle quickly and happily. They will make sure that your child plays games with classmates that develop vocabulary and fluency and our small class sizes mean that the staff can give your child a great deal of attention. Many of our students have experienced joining school with little English and are very welcoming and helpful. A programme of EAL will be organised, in conjunction with a Mother Tongue programme, which allows your child to have the vocabulary in their own language from which to develop their command of the English language. They will receive one lesson a week, further lessons are available at a cost of £22 per 40 minutes.
Yes, we will liaise with the school in preparation for your child’s move and make sure that they have covered the necessary concepts to ensure a smooth transition. Our Mother Tongue Programme ensures that students do not lose their fluency and ability to read and write in their own language.
No, unusually for an international school the Cambridge International School has a pretty stable population and at least half of our students are local UK residents. Whereas some classes may have two or three children who are with us for a limited period, lots of families are settled in Cambridge and intend to stay for the duration of their child’s education.
No. Students arriving with little or no English are given a concentrated programme of EAL to develop their language as quickly as possible. The classes they are immersed in are taken through their lessons at their usual pace and all pupils are tested to ensure that they are being challenged or extended at the optimum pace.
Yes. Sixth Form and Further Education Colleges throughout the UK and overseas accept the IGCSE. It is widely considered to be more intellectually rigorous than the GCSE and therefore as providing a better platform for A level or International Baccalaureate.
