On Tuesday, Year 7 and 8 pupils were treated to a PE lesson with a difference as Mr Salt turned Sergeant and prepared them for fighting in the trenches.
Year 7 are currently reading Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’ in English, and had just reached the chapter where the central character, Tommo, enlists to fight in WW1 and begins his training. This created a great opportunity for some cross-curricular work, with Year 8 joining the company as Sergeant Salt recreated some of the training conditions soldiers in 1914 would have experienced.
So, on an appropriately muddy field in the rain, our homegrown ‘Privates’ exercised in teams, carrying heavy packs, and crawling and running towards the ‘enemy’ in response to their Sergeant’s bellowed orders. They even discovered what the punishment was for an act of insubordination, although, as Year 7 discovered in English, Sergeant Salt was much kinder to them than those in charge during WW1.
