01 Mar Primary School Celebrate Mother Language Day
On Tuesday 27th February, all the Reception to Year 6 children, Mother Tongue Teachers, parents and class teachers at Cherry Hinton Hall celebrated International Mother Language Day, in an special hour-long assembly in the new Okes Hall.
The 14 mother tongue groups; Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, German, Polish, Hungarian, Farsi, Arabic, and of course, English, each gave a short presentation about their own language and culture. The presentations included; beautiful poems, traditional songs, pictures, traditional dress, typical objects and even juggling. Some parents joined in spontaneously, and we also heard and learned greetings in all the different languages.
The children in their different Mother Tongue groups were very excited and proud to show their own language to all the others, and everyone, even the youngest, were a fantastic audience. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to have the confidence to speak their native language in front of the school community and to learn about the different languages spoken by their school friends. After the assembly, we had very positive feedback from parents, teachers, and children about how much they had enjoyed the presentations and recognising the work of the children in preparing what they were going to say.
As a school, CIS is very proud to have such a rich, international community, and to be able to learn from and respect each other. We also have a group of wonderful, dedicated Mother Tongue teachers, who help our children to grow in their native language and share it with the others. A skill which is so important in today’s global society.
